May is Bike Month
It’s time to get your bike into gear and pedal your way into May. That’s right, folks, May is National Bike Month. Sponsored by the League of American Bicyclists and celebrated in communities coast to coast, Bike Month is a chance to showcase the many benefits of bicycling – and encourage more folks to give biking a try.
The perks of riding your bike are plentiful: increased cardiovascular fitness, improved joint mobility, increased blood flow, and decreased pollution and traffic congestion, just to name a few. A 30-minute bike ride can burn any where from roughly 200 to 300 calories, according to Harvard Health Publications.
As a region, Sacramento has pledged to ride 2 million miles during the month of May. It is not too late to sign up for bike month with your friends or office crew. Every mile counts and you play a huge role in contributing to our region’s success with this campaign.
Don’t forget to register your sweet ride! In an ongoing effort to deter bike theft, Sacramento Police Department’s Ride On campaign encourages bikers to register their bike as it greatly increases the likelihood that it will be returned if stolen. This past weekend, SPD recovered upwards of 50 stolen bikes in a storage unit and all registered bikes will be returned to their rightful owners.
