Nighttime Pedestrian Safety Measures Underway in The Kay

With the rise of nighttime entertainment hotspots around 10th & K over the last few years, the Sacramento Police Department and the 10th & K Collaborative identified potential safety issues resulting from the increased demand. Measures to ensure safety along The Kay, including late night street closures, will begin this weekend.

“We are excited by the success of the Kay entertainment area. When over 5,000 people frequenting a dozen venues packed into a couple of blocks, we want to be sure patrons are enjoying themselves in a safe environment, said DSP Community Services Director, Dion Dwyer.

As part of a Taxi Pilot Program, K Street will be closed to vehicle traffic during weekend late night hours between 10 pm to 3 am, from 8th street to 12th Street. Taxi cueing lines have already been rerouted to a ‘taxi zone’ located on 10th Street between K & L streets.

“Working in collaboration with public and private entities, we developed the Taxi Pilot Program to address the issues and facilitate a safer environment for venue patrons and motorists,” said Sacramento Police Department Sgt., Lane Polete.
