ARTHOUSE Gallery is proud to present “The Spaces Between” featuring art created by the discerning eye of area artist Craig Stephens. The exhibition will run August 7th through September 8th at ARTHOUSE Gallery, 1021 R. Street in historic downtown Sacramento. There will be an opening reception and opportunity to meet the artist Saturday, August 9th from 5:00 – 8:00 PM and an Artist Talk at 6:00 PM that evening.

“The Spaces Between” features Stephen’s work in gouache, a medium that he has discovered more recently and is fascinated by. Known for his still-lifes, in this exhibit Stephens explores the spaces and relationships between objects within the given space. His compositions feature various sized objects, depicted beautifully in their medium. They work well together and the negative space is showcased through the compositional set up.

A prolific painter, Stephens has completed a small painting in oil or gouache on a nearly daily basis since 2006.  Born in Sacramento, he grew up in the foothill town of Weimar. He attended American River College and UC Davis earning his B.A. in studio art. During his undergraduate years he had the privilege of studying with Gary Pruner, Roy DeForest, David Hollowell and Wayne Thiebaud. In 1996 Craig Stephens began teaching high school art classes at Chana High School in Auburn, California. He currently teaches art to high school students and adult painters in person and online. In 2022 his book, “The Beginner’s Guide to Oil Painting,” was published by Page Street Publishing, a subsidiary of McMillan Publishing. He resides in Auburn, California with his wonderful wife and amazing children. His works can be found in private and corporate collections throughout North America and Europe.

In addition to the Gallery Show, ARTHOUSE resident artists will open their studios to the public for Second Saturday, August 9th from 5:00 – 8:00.
