I am drawn to the monochrome image as I believe it is inherently an abstraction of the natural way we see the world—full of vibrant colors. Removing color adds importance to textures, tones, lines, and light, which impacts what is being conveyed in the photograph.

Black-and-white images need not be purely a set of gray tones bound by pure black and white tones that can be introduced to transform the image and richen it. I have been drawn to a ‘warmer’ palette in my black-and-white work.

The genesis of this exhibit was a desire to refocus on shooting in black and white and challenge myself to use one camera with one focal length. My NorthStar was to use one monochrome camera, a fixed 28mm lens, and 25 months. Any subject that caught my eye was acceptable.

I hope that these images allow you to see What Caught My Eye.
