Dedicated to providing educational enrichment opportunities and be a laboratory of learning for future generations, the California State Railroad Museum is proud to present a “Loco Lab: Physics in Locomotion” STEM workshop on Sunday, July 26, 2026, from 1-2:30 p.m.

The special, one-day-only workshop is designed for 6th-9th graders. During the 90-minute, hands-on session, students will learn some of the physics behind making a steam locomotive move and discover the power behind the Museum’s greatest machines.

Focus areas for the workshop include:

Discovering four different types of motion
Learning how engineers understand motion to move giant trains
Experimenting with motion by building machines themselves
Exploring the museum before or afterwards to see incredible railroad engineering up close

The workshop costs $15 per student and includes the opportunity for the participant and one adult to explore the museum before and/or after the program. Space is limited and registration closes at 11:59 p.m. on July 22. The workshop takes place in the Stanford Gallery at the California State Railroad Museum (111 I Street in Old Sacramento).

The California State Railroad Museum is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., regular admission to the California State Railroad Museum is $12 for adults, $6 for youth (ages 6 to 17), and are free for children five and under.
