Shop Seasonal Produce at Downtown Sac’s Markets
Skip the grocery store this week. Downtown gives you two opportunities to shop directly from local farmers at the Capitol Mall Farmers’ Market on Wednesdays and the Bodega Market on Thursdays. Grab fresh produce for your weekly meal preps, bring a basket of fruit back to the office, and use this month-by-month guide to know exactly what to keep an eye out for.
Where to Shop
Capitol Mall Farmers’ Market | Wednesdays | 9 AM–1 PM
Local farmers from across the Sacramento region line Capitol Mall with tables full of freshly picked produce. It’s the kind of market where you’ll probably leave with more than you planned because someone hands you a sample of the juiciest peach or sweetest watermelon you’ve had all summer.
CalFresh/EBT Benefits accpeted, learn more here.
Bodega Market | Thursdays | 10:30 AM–1:30 PM
Think of Bodega as your Thursday lunch break with benefits. You can grab a quick lunch and visit the Land-Based Learning Produce Truck. They bring locally grown produce downtown while helping shoppers learn more about where their food comes from and the farmers growing it. It’s a really cool concept that’s worth checking out.
SNAP/EBT (food stamps) accepted, plus a 50% discount offered through Market Match. Learn more here.
What fruits and veggies to look for Downtown Sac weekly markets:
May – July
During late spring and peak summer month’s, the farmers’ stands are overflowing with all kinds of fresh produce. Don’t be afraid to leave with a bag that’s a little heavier than you planned. We’re all doing it, plus we’re supporting local farmers!
Fruits: Apricots, blackberries, blueberries, cherries, cantaloupe, peaches, plums, raspberries, strawberries, and watermelons.
Vegetables: Artichokes, asparagus, broccoli, carrots, celery, corn, cucumbers, green beans, peas, bell peppers, radishes, spinach, summer squash, zucchini, and tomatoes.
This summer, I have been especially loving the plums! Eating them solo or in a green salad with some cucumber and blue cheese hits the spot every time.
August – October
As summer winds down, the market shifts right along with it. One week you might be picking up fresh grapes, and late-season plums. Then next you’re filling your bag with crisp apples, brussels sprouts, and cauliflower.
Fruits: Apples, grapes, melons, nectarines, pears, plums, pomegranates, raspberries, and strawberries.
Vegetables: Beets, Brussels sprouts, butternut squash, cabbage, cauliflower, celery, eggplant, kale, leeks, onions, parsnips, potatoes, and winter squash.
Although I am a sucker for the early summer fruits, I love late-summer, early-fall vegetables. The fresh vegetables from the market make for a yummy compilation of oven-roasted sides for dinner that are so good.
We’re more than halfway through the 2026 Downtown Sac market season, so start planning out your produce shopping list. The Bodega Market ends September 24 and The Capitol Mall Farmer’s Market ends on October 26.
