Found Downtown: LabRats Sunday Sessions

Marlee Wallace

Downtown is spoiled in the summers with an abundance of concerts and festivals, but the winter months make me crave live music. If you’re like me and missing a place to hear people singing and bands playing, you’re in luck. LabRats and Torch Club have organized Sunday Sessions, a free, weekly jam session at Torch Club.

Torch Club opened in the 30’s. It’s got a bluesy, dive bar feel to it and it’s one of the last small music venues in Sacramento that gives space to musicians to showcase their talent. I went to Sunday Sessions a few weeks ago and it was an experience.

We got there a little early and the dark bar with red picture-frame-filled walls was pretty empty. We got drinks, said hi to some people and found a table. LabRats, a local Sacramento band and Concerts in the Park alum, was on stage warming up the crowd with their electronic jazzy beats. People are bobbing their heads and drumming their thumbs, and then they introduce Sunday Sessions.

They invite people to hop on stage as they feel it, to jam with instruments, sing a song, but “if you feel like you’ve been up here for a long time, move on” as it’s important for everyone to get a little shine. After about a half hour, the place was packed. There wasn’t a free table or bar stool in sight and everyone was feeling the groove.

This week is the perfect week to check it out for yourself with it being a three-day-weekend. Music starts at 8PM and ends at 11PM at Torch Club on 15th Street, no cover charge. 904 15th St, Sacramento, CA 95814
