Uncover the century-long pattern of recruitment and deportation of Mexican laborers in “Help Wanted / Leave Now,” on view at the California Museum through January 10, 2027.

August 13, 2026 – January 10, 2027

For over a century, the story of labor in the United States has been a cycle of “Help Wanted” and “Leave Now.” Anchored in the 1950s deportation campaign “Operation Wetback,” this first-of-its-kind bilingual exhibition at the California Museum explores how generations of Mexican workers were recruited to sustain U.S. industry, only to face mass expulsion during times of economic anxiety and political scapegoating.

Through firsthand accounts, rare photographs, historical artifacts, and interactive elements, the exhibit confronts difficult truths while honoring the individuals whose labor has underpinned American economic growth.

“Help Wanted/Leave Now” is a fully bilingual display, presented in both English and Spanish.

Located at 1020 O Street in the March Fong Eu Secretary of State complex, the Museum is open Tuesday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. General admission is $8-$10.
