HOW TO CALL

Knowing how to accurately report a crime may have an effect on the outcome. 

DO:

  • Do take photos and videos if safe to do so
  • Do be as specific as possible with the incident 
  • Do explain when you feel endangered what is being said to you, and if there are any weapons involved
  • Do describe all parties involved, specifically their physical characteristics (hair color, eye color, facial hair, etc.) first
  • Do advise if the parties involved arrived/left on foot, bike, or vehicle (if possible give a description of the bike/vehicle – make, model, color, license plate and direction of travel)

DON’T:

  • Don’t assume an individual’s housing status when filing a report 
  • Don’t describe all parties involved by their clothing

WHY TO CALL

Reporting criminal activity and code enforcement is an important step to helping improve the downtown landscape.  While some incidents may not receive immediate interference, the City of Sacramento documents repeat calls which lead to them providing certain areas additional attention over time. Calling 311 creates an important record necessary for increased funding, allocation of resources, and more. 

What it means to report a crime and cooperate with law enforcement:

  • Immediately addressing the issue with Sacramento Police Department officers, including: 
    • getting officers to the scene to address with the issuegiving officers a verbal statement about what happened
    • signing a citizen’s arrest form if necessary
  • Reporting an issue assures that law enforcement has accurate data for deciding where to devote limited resources
  • Reporting can lead to longer term solutions for individuals in need
  • Reporting can also support efforts of District Attorney’s office to mitigate future offenses
