SACRAMENTO, CALIF. (December 19, 2017) – Downtown Sacramento Partnership today announced former three-term mayor of Pittsburgh, Tom Murphy, will keynote downtown’s most anticipated event of the year. The 20th annual State of Downtown breakfast presented by Stantec will return to Memorial Auditorium on Tuesday, January 23, 2018 at 8 a.m. to celebrate two decades of sharing the stories and indicators behind Sacramento’s thriving urban core.

“State of Downtown provides a unique opportunity to discuss the ingredients and decisions that drive success in downtown,” said Michael Ault, executive director of Downtown Sacramento Partnership. “Pittsburgh is an international model for how a city remade itself. We’re excited to welcome Tom and learn from his extensive experience in urban revitalization, in particular in key areas we’re focused on – riverfront, housing, building and more.”

Murphy is an Urban Land Institute senior resident fellow and the ULI Canizaro/Klingbeil Family Chair for Urban Development. As mayor of Pittsburgh between 1994 and 2006, he initiated a public/private partnership strategy that leveraged Carnegie Mellon University’s academic presence to create regional economic development in technology fields and more than $4.5 billion in economic development in the city. Murphy led efforts to secure and oversee $1 billion in funding for the development of two professional sports facilities and a new convention center that is the largest certified green building in the United States. He also developed strategic partnerships to transform more than 1,000 acres of blighted, abandoned industrial properties into new commercial, residential, retail, and public uses, and oversaw the development of more than 25 miles of new riverfront trails and parks.

Produced by Downtown Sacramento Partnership, State of Downtown attracts an audience of more than 800 business professionals and community leaders to preview downtown revitalization initiatives and projects. The 2018 State of Downtown will feature Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg, keynote speaker Tom Murphy, as well as the JVance Stewart Award for Community Service presentation.

“Stantec is proud to present State of Downtown. We are deeply committed to our community,” said Christopher Wilson, a senior principal in Stantec’s Capitol Mall office. “Sacramento continues to be on the forefront of smart growth, and we’re excited about this opportunity to come together to celebrate recent accomplishments, and look toward the future of Sacramento and our Downtown.”

The program will be held at Memorial Auditorium, located at 1515 J Street in Sacramento, on January 23 at 8 a.m.  Tickets range from $35 (program only) to $100 (floor seat, includes breakfast) and are available at www.DowntownSac.org/sod2018. The program is presented by Stantec and sponsored by Kaiser Permanente, Sutter Health, CBRE, Downtown Commons, Golden 1 Credit Union, JLL, Sacramento Regional Transit, Position Interactive, Sactown Magazine and Comstock’s.
